My Wife, My Abuser — why Richard’s story matters

5 Mar 2025

Overview —

My Wife, My Abuser tells the story of Richard Spencer, whose outwardly enviable marriage hid two decades of coercive control and physical abuse. The film follows his decision to record what was happening, the painstaking police investigation that followed, and a court case that finally named the behaviour for what it was. Using Richard’s own footage alongside police interviews and body-worn video, the documentary shows how coercive control operates—and how it can be proved.

Reach —

“Across Channel 5 and Netflix, the film reached around 7.5 million viewers - hitting No. 1 on Netflix in the UK for two weeks. That reach brought an urgent conversation into homes that might never have sought out a specialist documentary on domestic abuse.”

Impact —

Beyond the viewing figures, the response has been humbling. Social media was filled not only with shocked viewers, but with friends, families and survivors recognising patterns, sharing experiences and signposting support. A number of police forces across the UK now cite the case as an example of best practice in handling coercive control, and the film has been adopted within training by the Met Police. This is why we make documentaries: to illuminate, to validate lived experience, and—when possible—to help people find a way forward.

With thanks —

We cannot thank Richard Spencer enough for the courage it took to share his story—knowing that doing so might help others name what’s happening to them and seek support. Any positive impact the film has had belongs first to Richard, and to the officers and specialists who treated his case with care.
